Choosing a Major

Choosing a major that will help you achieve your professional career goals is an important decision. The following steps may guide your decision-making process.

STEP ONE: Get to know yourself.

What do you like? What don't you like? What is important to you? What are you most passionate about? What experiences would you like to have? What are your strengths? How can you use them? What kinds of problems do you want to learn to solve? What is your calling?

By taking self-assessments, engaging in reflection, and talking with others, you can gain a deeper understanding of who you are and what kind of work or service you want to provide.

STEP TWO: Gather information

Information comes in all shapes and sizes. At the click of a mouse you have access to a vast amount of information. There are online tools to assist you in exploring career-related information. Information can also be obtained through informational interviewing and networking. Talk to your professors and faculty advisors. Set up an appointment with a career counselor. Meet with professionals in the areas of interest to you. Attend the annual Majors Fair.

STEP THREE: Go for it!

Contact your faculty advisor in order to complete a major declaration form and start taking classes toward your degree!
