NCU Promotes Alcohol Awareness
Release Date: Monday, October 19, 2009
The week of October 12th thru the 16th was NCU's Alcohol
Awareness Week.
Monday began with a poster contest in which students were
encouraged to create unique posters advocating the awareness of
alcohol. Random facts were also posted all over the cafeteria and
bulletin boards. On Tuesday, two automobiles, which had been
totaled as a result of drunk driving, were placed on campus for all
of the students to see. The cars were surrounded by first hand
stories of people who were killed in alcohol related accidents.
During Wednesday's Chapel, Dave Fenner, one of NCU's psychology
professors, spoke about his personal struggle with alcohol and
Christianity. Following Chapel, the students were able to make
personal pledges regarding alcohol use. Thursday evening, the
Residence Assistants hosted the "Hazy Maze" where the students were
able to wear a pair of beer goggles and attempt to complete an
obstacle course. Lastly, on Friday, ten students were picked to
represent the 96 people who die per day due to alcohol related
accidents. Each student wore a t-shirt that stated how many people
they represented. It averaged out to one person dying every fifteen
minutes.
Student Body President, Anthony Kempf, had this to say, "I think
it was a great learning opportunity to become more aware of the
dangers of using alcohol and the consequences it could have. I
think it was also neat to see all of the students who made a
pledge."
